Hypnosis & Counselling in the treatment of Chronic Illness
by David Frank & Bernard Mooney PHD
This book is a succinct and fully comprehensive explanation of
the history of Hypnosis and the affect it has on the
mind/body system. The authors present many well researched
case histories to support their hypothesis that cancer can
be thought of as a psychoneuroimmunological response in the
body.
The premise being that a person’s outlook can have either a
positive or negative impact on their immune system. The
authors propound that the subconscious mind has the ability
to create a physiological response to positive Hypnotic
suggestion and they give case histories showing how this
direct connection can be utilised as a healing tool to
benefit the patient. The book explores psychological aspects
of illness such as the unconscious mind ‘death wish’ and the
‘placebo effect.’
Many conditions are covered; Asthma, Cancer, Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome to name a few, with plenty of examples which
explore the psychological patterns prevalent in different
conditions. Though not paradigm shifting this book moves us
to a more open perspective; one which suggests that person
centred therapy coupled with Hypnosis can powerfully affect
the immune system, creating a more positive outcome for
those suffering from cancer and other chronic conditions.
