The status of hypnotherapy in the UK

hypnotherapy in the uk is practised under common law. This means that the profession is not subject to legislation, and hypnotherapists do not have to meet any criteria whatsoever to practice. This means that expressions like 'governing body' and other similar self-appointed titles are absolutely meaningless. I'm seeing more and more misleading claims on therapists web sites these days, what a sad reflection of the state of the profession!

How do we know that this situation isn't dangerous to the public? A commons select committee examined the profession a number of years ago, and decided that there was no case to put hypnotherapy forward for statutory regulation, which it certainly would have done if they had considered that there was a need to do this to protect the public!
