Judy had struggled with her weight all
her life and went to a hypnotherapist. At the time she weighed 16 stone.
Her hypnotherapist, Rosemarie, used a two-part process. Firstly, getting
Judy to understand her behaviour then, through a relaxed state of mind,
suggesting how she could alter her habits to new, healthier habits.
"When they are completely relaxed and open to suggestion,'' said
Rosemarie, "then you go into saying things like, ‘The wonderful smell of
fresh fruit, and taste, now interest you and make you feel very strong.'
“She lost seven stone and, three years since Judy’s first session, she
still weighs just over nine stone. |
Obesity has been highlighted as a public health problem ranking alongside
smoking. It is linked to a nine-year reduction in life expectancy and some
30,000 deaths each year. There is government alarm at the increase in
obesity in the UK and we appear to be following America’s lead. It is
recognised that urgent action is needed. However, current government policy is
neither tough enough, nor targeted enough, to tackle this national ‘epidemic’
problem in our society. General healthy eating advice has been around
for years. But it does not tell individuals how they can effect these changes
in order to make a lasting difference to their lifestyle and weight.
The government’s intentions are admirable but they do not know how to change
people’s behaviour and are in danger of wasting money promoting unhelpful
initiatives. They need to consult with a range of obesity experts – including
hypnotherapists – who specialise in enabling individuals to change their
behaviour and control their weight. A study by the New England Journal of
Medicine suggests that obesity is socially contagious, ‘a fat flu’, if you
like. People come to think that it’s ok to be bigger since those around them
are bigger.
Consciously or unconsciously, people look to others when deciding how much to
eat, how much to exercise and how much weight is ‘too much’. Another theory
contends that health programmes need to target expectant mothers to ensure
optimal nutrition as those individuals receiving poor nutrition in the womb
generally grow up eating high calorie, high fat diets, and at a higher risk of
certain diseases. Fad diets rarely have lasting effects, even potentially
leading to a reduction in confidence and motivation as the person loses their
belief that they really can lose weight.
Hypnosis can
help
As our bodies perceive dieting as a form of starvation, we must look towards
our mind to help us to outsmart this survival mechanism. Hypnotherapy can
address various issues which are concerned with obesity. It can help alter a
person’s behaviour patterns. For example it can drastically reduce dependence
on willpower and make new healthy eating habits the automatic preference. It
is an age-old technique designed to speak to your subconscious mind and alter
your behaviour. Known to work well for quitting smoking, it can also
re-programme eating habits, one’s attitude towards exercise and alcohol. In
fact it can improve a person’s whole mindset of how they view themselves.
Hypnotherapy can be
used to install positive habits for maintaining healthy weight loss such as
small, permanent dietary changes, regular physical activity, realistic goals
and removal of negative emotional habits which cause people to eat for
emotional reasons.
Because you're in a compromised state during hypnotherapy, it's important to
check the therapist’s credentials. Choose a hypnotherapist who is a registered
health care provider. For any therapist involved in helping clients with
weight loss, offering a personal, effective service with successful results is
paramount. Each client presents a new situation, with issues varying from
habit eating to psychological and health-related issues.
Hypnosis can have numerous other applications besides weight loss. For
instance, it can also treat sleep disorders, migraines, anxieties, ulcers,
nausea and depression. It can be used to increase self confidence, self worth,
reduce stress, and improve athletic performance and to quickly address fears
and phobias.
Self-hypnosis CDs
can also used in order to reinforce the suggestions of the sessions and as a
reminder of new goals. Developing a healthier approach to eating patterns
deserves a reward, so people should pamper themselves; go for a massage – or
simply relax to their favourite hypnosis recording with fragrant candles and
oils – whatever appeals the most – and doing this on a regular basis to remind
them that they’re worth it.
The way forward
The facts are
frightening; obesity is a national problem which must be urgently addressed in
a targeted, effective way by changing people’s behaviour including working
with hypnotherapists who are doing this so
successfully.
